We’re starting a new series, Lectures at Jay’s, inspired by the Lectures on Tap series. Every 3rd Thursday we’ll have a community member, scholar, practitioner, etc come give a presentation regarding their field of expertise and afterwards we’ll chat about it!
Our first lecture will be Foundations of Violence: U.S. Westward Expansion and Native Resistance and will be presented by Darian!
Description: Legislation passed in the mid to late 1800s systematically stripped Native peoples of their sovereignty. Destructive precedents were set that enabled the U.S. government to impose forceful removal of indigenous peoples from their ancestral lands. The killing of Native peoples that had been taking place since the first European settlers arrived in North America now had legal backing. Native resistance of U.S. westward expansion involved fragile treaties, counter violence, and even attempted assimilation.
